EA Giving Tuesday

Donation matching initiative

  • Dec 1, 2020 11:28 a.m. EST: Facebook's 100% match of $2 million began at 8 a.m. and (we assume) ended seconds later. Many donations not eligible for the 100% match may have still been eligible for the 10% match of the next $50 million in donations. In total, we estimate nearly $1.6 million donated to highly effective nonprofits, up from $1.1 million last year. We expect to find out in January 2021 which donations were matched. In the meantime, you can find some details amounts donated and pledged below.

About EA Giving Tuesday

EA Giving Tuesday organizes people around a shared goal: to direct Facebook’s matching funds to highly effective nonprofits, by donating quickly on Giving Tuesday.

The EA Giving Tuesday team supports both donors and highly effective nonprofits, to make it as easy as possible to participate in this unique matching opportunity.

What were the matching program details this year? Facebook contributed $7 million USD in matching funds, with the first $2 million donations matched at 100%, and (we believe) the next $50 million donations matched at 10%. Facebook matched donations of up to $20,000 USD per donor and $100,000 USD per US nonprofit. The 100% match began on December 1, 2020, at 8:00 am EST, and (we assume) ended seconds later. We expected that donating fast would be especially important this year, and we implemented new strategies to support donors.

Who organizes EA Giving Tuesday? The EA Giving Tuesday team and Rethink Charity organize this project. EA Giving Tuesday is motivated by effective altruism (EA), and many people in the EA community help us immensely.
